How to let customers edit or cancel a Shopify order after checkout
A customer places an order and, a minute later, notices the wrong size, a typo in the street name, or a second item they meant to add. On most stores, fixing it means writing to support and waiting. Someone on your team then opens the order, makes the change by hand and hopes the parcel has not been packed yet. The faster your warehouse, the shorter the time in which that still works.
This guide explains what Shopify does on its own, where it stops, and how to let customers make these changes themselves, inside a window you control.
What Shopify does on its own
Shopify's admin lets your staff edit an order that has not been fulfilled: add products, remove items, change quantities and discount what was added. When the total goes up, Shopify can send the customer an invoice for the difference; when it goes down, you refund it. Staff can also change the shipping address and cancel the order. All of this is done by your team, from the admin.
On the customer's side, Shopify's self-serve returns can let customers request a cancellation of items that have not shipped yet, from the order status page. It is a request: you approve or decline it, and a cancellation is finished through the normal refund flow.
What you will not find in a standard Shopify setup is a way for the customer to change the order directly: swap a size, change a quantity, add a product or correct the address without writing to you first. Shopify adds features often, so check the current Shopify Help Center before you decide.
Why the edit window matters
Self-service editing is only safe while the order is still in your hands. Once it is packed or handed to a carrier, a change on screen no longer matches the parcel. That is why every approach to customer editing comes down to a window: a period after checkout during which the customer may change the order, and after which the order is final.
How long that window should be depends on how you ship. A store that packs orders the same afternoon needs a short window or a daily cutoff. A store that ships made-to-order products can leave the order open until it ships.
How AfterSale Suite handles it
AfterSale Suite adds an edit panel to the thank-you page and to the order status page in Shopify's customer accounts. Inside the window you set, the customer can:
- change the quantity of an item
- swap a variant, for example another size or colour
- exchange an item for a different product
- add a product or remove an item
- change the shipping address
- edit the order note or a gift message
- cancel the whole order
You choose which of these are allowed. Each change goes through Shopify's own order editing, so the order in your admin, your fulfilment and your reports is the corrected order, not the old one with a note next to it.
The window can be a number of minutes after the order, a fixed hour each day (orders placed before the cutoff stay editable until it), or open until the order ships. If your own team fulfils orders, you can also hold fulfilment while the window is open, so nothing is packed before the customer is done.
Money follows the change. When an edit raises the total, the customer receives an invoice for the difference, and AfterSale tells you if it stays unpaid longer than the number of hours you set. When an edit lowers the total, you choose what happens: wait for your approval, refund to the original payment, or refund as store credit. You can also charge a fixed shipping fee for each added item.
A log in the admin lists every change, which ones Shopify accepted and which it refused, and why. When Shopify refuses a change, for example because a product went out of stock, the customer sees a message and the order stays as it was.
Limits to know before you install
- AfterSale Suite needs Shopify's new customer accounts. The panel does not appear on the classic order status page.
- Only unfulfilled items can be changed. Once part of an order has shipped, the shipped quantities are final.
- Holding fulfilment while the window is open works on orders your own staff fulfil. It does not apply to orders handed to a third-party fulfilment service.
- A refund to the original payment is real money leaving your account. If you want to look at each one first, keep the setting on "wait for my approval".
- An address change does not recalculate shipping. If a new address could land in a different shipping zone, decide whether you want to offer address changes at all.
Getting started
Install the app, open Settings and pick the window that matches how fast you ship. Untick the changes you do not want to offer; many stores start with variant swaps, address fixes and cancellation, then add the rest. Place a test order, change it from the thank-you page and look at the result in your admin and in the AfterSale log.
You can find the app here: AfterSale Suite on the Shopify App Store. Order editing is switched on at install, and every other module stays off until you turn it on.
